Paul Manafort: The Trial Begins

Alexandria, Virginia — Tuesday marks the first day of the criminal trial for Paul Manafort, the former campaign chairman for President Trump.

Manafort is the first person to stand trial in relation to special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russian probe.

The New York Times: The charges include money laundering, violating a federal lobbying disclosure law, obstruction of justice, moving income through offshore accounts, lying to banks, and evading taxes. If convicted on the more serious charges stemming from the thirty-two count indictment, Manafort, could be sentenced up to thirty years for each.

Last week Prosecutors said, they don’t intend to delve into “questions about collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign in this case.”

Presiding over the case is District Court Judge T.S. Ellis.

The trial is expected to last at least three weeks, scheduled to testify against Manafort is his former business partner Richard Gates, who plead guilty to “conspiracy to commit fraud and lying to the FBI.” Gates also worked on President Trump campaign.
