Here are a few stories that have caught my eye today:

Suicide of the West

When the Founders said “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, . . .” they cheated. It is not self-evident that our Creator endowed humans with unalienable rights. Something self-evident is, by definition, obvious, needing no demonstration. The existence of gravity is obvious. It is self-evident that fire burns. Yet it’s hardly obvious to everyone there’s even a Creator.

Judge won’t let Trump attorney Cohen review seized files before the feds, as Stormy Daniels speaks out

Cohen, who formerly worked at the Trump Organization, is under criminal investigation as part of a grand jury probe into his personal conduct and business dealings, including a $130,000 payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels in exchange for her silence about a sexual encounter with the married Trump in 2006.

Trump halts Russian sanctions announced by Haley

Why it matters: The decision is sure to add to the perception that Trump is often unwilling to harshly punish Russia, especially after WashPost’s report yesterday that detailed his anger over the scope of the expulsions of Russian diplomats from the United States in response to the Skripal nerve agent attack in England.


From CNN Money:

Black men arrested at Philadelphia Starbucks agree to meet with CEO

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney issued his own statement saying the incident “appears to exemplify what racial discrimination looks like in 2018.” He added that the apology from Starbucks “is not enough” and that he would ask the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations to examine the firm’s policies and procedures and whether there should be bias training for its employees.
