Oldest Pearl Harbor survivor reflects ahead of Memorial Day

From CNN

Ray Chavez is the oldest survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor that launched America’s entry into World War II in 1941.

At 106, the indefatigable veteran has been traveling around the country for years, attending memorial services and commemorations. This week, he met with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office while in Washington for a series of Memorial Day events.

Ahead of the Memorial Day weekend, Chavez reflected on his service, and recounted his experience on the day that President Franklin Roosevelt declared would “live in infamy.”

Ken Starr says he understands advice against Trump sitting down with Mueller

From The Hill

Former independent counsel Ken Starr said on Saturday that he understands the reluctance of President Trump‘s attorneys to grant special counsel Robert Mueller‘s team an interview with the president.

But the president may have an obligation to move forward with the interview anyway, Starr said in an interview on Fox News.

Elizabeth Warren is quietly working to defang Trump’s ‘Pocahontas’ slur as 2020 looms

From CNN

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren has quietly waged a months-long, behind-the-scenes effort to put “Pocahontas” in the past.

President Donald Trump has used the slur since the 2016 presidential campaign to skewer her claims — passed down through family stories, Warren says — of Cherokee and Delaware ancestry.

Warren delivered her most forceful rebuttal yet during a speech at the National Congress of American Indians in February. The speech opened a new chapter of Warren leaning into her heritage — a move that could help her diffuse a political landmine ahead of a potential 2020 presidential run by building goodwill with Native American leaders who could validate her claims and vouch for her advocacy on issues important to their communities.

MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace stops reading Trump tweets on air: ‘These are boldface lies’

From The Hill

MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace cut herself off mid-sentence while reading President Trump’s tweets on-air Friday, calling them “boldface lies.”

“I’m not reading any more of this,” Wallace said with a laugh. “These are boldface lies and as his audacity and his sort of fantasies expand, I wonder what role you think the truth plays in this for any of them.”

Republican leader: ‘For all practical purposes’ there’s no difference between an FBI informant and a spy

From The Hill

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said on Saturday that he doesn’t see a difference between an FBI informant and a spy in relation to recent revelations that the FBI used an informant to investigate the Trump presidential campaign.

In an interview with radio host Hugh Hewitt, Cornyn said that there is no difference between a “confidential informant” and a spy.

Stunning Oval Office leak: Aides fight in front of Trump — about leaks

From Axios

Shortly after word leaked that Kelly Sadler had taken a nasty shot at John McCain, President Trump convened a meeting in the Oval Office for a tiny group of communications staffers, according to sources familiar with the gathering. Sadler, Mercedes Schlapp, Raj Shah, and John Kelly all gathered in front of the Resolute Desk for a conversation with Trump about the leaking problem. They were the only people in the room, though the door to the outer Oval was open.

What happened: The president told Sadler she wouldn’t be fired for her remark. He added, separately in the conversation, that he’s no fan of McCain. Then Trump, who had grown obsessed with the leaking problem, told Sadler he wanted to know who the leakers were. Sadler then stunned the room: To be completely honest, she said, she thought one of the worst leakers was Schlapp, her boss.
