Last night, at the Washington Correspondents Dinner, comedienne Michelle Wolf didn’t hold back. Opening her act, she burst right out of the gate with, “Good evening, here we are at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner; like a porn star says when she’s about to have sex with Trump, let’s get this over with.”
The President, who opted to stage a rally in Michigan rather than attend the dinner, missed Wolf saying, “It’s 2018 and you can’t shut me up. Unless you have Michael Cohen wire me $130,000.” After saying that Cohen could find her under her porn star name “Reince Preibus”, Wolf went on to note the President’s absence. “I know…I would drag him here myself, but it turns out that the president of the United States is the one pussy you’re not allowed to grab. He said it first. Yeah, he did. You remember? Good.”
She went after Kellyanne Conway, noting Conway’s name is “perfect” for what she does and told the press they should stop having her on their shows because all she does is lie.
She burned Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Press Secretary, “I actually really like Sarah. I think she’s very resourceful. But she burns facts and then she uses that ash to create a perfect smokey eye,” Wolf quipped about Sanders. “Like maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s lies. It’s probably lies.”
She told a rather ugly abortion joke that ended with, “I know a lot of you are very anti-abortion, you know, unless it’s the one you got for your secret mistress.”
She warned the ladies in the audience to cover their drinks, since Fox News was present.
She zinged the Democrats by saying they are hard to make fun of because they don’t do anything. Then zinged both parties by pointing out that the Dems are going to lose in the fall to a Republican called “Jeff Pedophile Nazi Doctor” because they always find a way to mess up.
There was more, but those are the highlights. Or low lights perhaps.
The reaction from many was that Wolf’s jokes were over the line and some journalists lamented that this behavior is why the public doesn’t trust them.
If the #WHCD dinner did anything tonight, it made the chasm between journalists and those who don't trust us, even wider. And those of us based in the red states who work hard every day to prove our objectivity will have to deal with it.

There was the predictable praise of Wolf from the Resistance:
Every journalist in America needs to stop clutching their pearls and start doing their jobs more like Michelle Wolf. #WHCD

Michelle Wolf made you uncomfortable.
Good.
Was it mean-spirited?
Maybe.
But look at Trump’s tweets & tell me why a comedian is held to a higher standard than the President?
Also, those Trump supporters who are upset about all of this?
Yeah. Let’s take a look ⬇️ #WHCD pic.twitter.com/RkMPZZkYQV

Some nuggets of truth:
Michelle Wolf's most honest line of the night at #WHCD:
"You (all media) helped create this monster (Trump) and now you're profiting off of him."— Wajahat Ali (@WajahatAli) April 29, 2018
And a whole bunch of hypocrisy from the Right:
Tonight’s #WHCD was a disgrace

#WHCD
What a disgrace!
A totally disrespectful “comedy” act. Degrading the office of POTUS then criticizing Press Sec Sanders physical appearance, more.No wonder @realDonaldTrump chooses to be with real Americans instead of these self absorbed media fools. #MAGA ??

25 thousand people came to see @realdonaldtrump yesterday in Michigan. Many could not fit in the arena. He skipped insulting #WHCD to focus on the real people of this country. Something he has done since day one! #MAGA

Boy, am I glad I spent the evening with my kids and friends. This #WHCD “comedian” is a complete disgrace. The Left’s intolerance and mean-spiritedness knows no bounds. https://t.co/fKSpDMGULT

Actually, there was so much hypocrisy that I can’t possibly begin to document it here. And, as usual these days, the right is bringing their A game to the hypocrisy arena.
The same people who are decrying a comedienne roasting the Press Secretary for her smokey eye shadow tweet the ugliest pictures they can find of said comedienne. The same people who self righteously point out that they will have nothing to do with a vulgar comedienne at the press dinner by quoting scripture will give the man they voted for a mulligan for cheating on his wife (who had given birth to his son four months earlier) with a porn star. The same people who weep about the left making pedophile jokes at a correspondents’ dinner would have elected a man who was accused by multiple women of pursuing, and even assaulting them, as young teenagers. The same man who calls Wolf’s jokes disgraceful was fired for texting female colleagues pictures of his male anatomy. The same people who moan about how mean the press is to Donald Trump did not and do not care when he lies or calls other people insulting, juvenile nicknames and defames them or mocks the disabled.
By caring more about the tasteless jokes than the tasteless behavior that prompted the jokes, the right is proving to the world that they have indeed ceded the moral high ground. When they hold a comedienne to a higher standard than they hold the man they elected president, the right gives the left all the fodder needed to be the butt of the joke for the foreseeable future. This could have been avoided, of course.
Perhaps they shouldn’t have elected a man who is utterly unfit to hold any office, let alone the highest office in the land. Perhaps they shouldn’t have elected a man who bragged about moving on women “like a bitch”. Or who said that avoiding STDs was his personal Vietnam. Or who said that he would date Ivanka if she wasn’t his daughter. Or who has a habit of calling his enemies nicknames that no self respecting 4th grade bully would use. Or who slept with a porn star and paid her $130,000 to keep quiet about it. Perhaps they shouldn’t have elected a man who gives the press so much ammunition against him that they don’t even need to bother making up stories to hurt him.
There is a quote that applies here:
If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should have behaved better.
Anne Lamott
If the GOP is uncomfortable about jokes about lying liars who lie, pussy grabbing, porn star sleeping, pedophiles, Nazis, abortions for mistresses, and hush money from a comedienne, perhaps they should think about cleaning up their party so the jokes do not apply.
