Propaganda Watch: Russian Social Media Ads–3/30/19

This is part of an ongoing series where I review some of the ads purchased by the Russians. In doing so I hope we can get a better understanding of what they were trying to do, and how to recognize it the next time we’re faced with propaganda.

If you want to follow along, the ads can all be downloaded here. The ads I’m using today came from the 2015-q3/2015-09 folder.

In September of 2015 the Russians were trying to figure out what states and cities would elicit reactions. As stated before, Texas was on their sites. It wasn’t just the secessionist groups, but the Patriot US group who also pushed Texan beauty (file p(1)0002414:

Meanwhile, “Patriot’s Heart”–a different Russian right-wing page, professed its love for New York City…or at least, acknowledged its existence (p(1)0003646)

Meanwhile, the “Don’t Shoot” page declared that St. Louis was “too beautiful for injustice.” There are jokes to be made about there not being an image accompanying this file, but having never been to St. Louis myself, I can neither say if it would or would not be accurate. I can say they deserve better grammar than this ad gave them. File p(1)0003500:

That’s it for now. Let’s not forget that this is far from over, and Russia continues to poke their fingers into, not only our pies, but into the politics of many other nations.

Please enjoy this Open Thread, and have a great Saturday.
