Jay Sekulow, attorney for President Trump, told CNN’s Alisyn Camerota that the president’s written answers to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s questions should not be released due to their confidential nature.
Camerota asked Sekulow, “Will you release the president’s answers, the written answers, that you gave to Robert Mueller’s team? Can the public see those?”
“Well, that would not be a position that I would want, to just make a statement where we would release confidential communications that took place between the President of the United States and the Department of Justice or the special counsel’s office, ” Jay said.
He stated that he would fight aggressively to prevent the release of the written statement and explained, “Because as a lawyer, you don’t waive privileges and you don’t waive investigative detail absent either a court order or an agreement between the parties. And you’d have to weigh a lot of factors there on how that affects other presidencies. So, I think that it is not a simple just wave your hand and we release the document. I think that would be very inappropriate.”
Sekulow concluded by saying that, while he has strong opinions about it, the decision will be up to Attorney General Barr to make.
Why It Matters
Donald Trump is the President of the United States. He answers to the citizens of the country he was elected to serve. If he is truly innocent, he will ensure the entire Mueller Report is released to the public, including his answers to the questions Mueller’s team asked.
