Former Obama Administration White House Counsel, Gregory Craig, has been indicted, prosecutors said on Thursday.

According to the Department of Justice Office of Public Affairs, a federal grand jury “returned an indictment charging,” Craig, a Washington based attorney, “with making false statements and concealing material information about his activities on behalf of Ukraine from the Department of Justice, National Security Division’s Foreign Agents Registration Act Unit (FARA Unit).”

If found guilty Craig could be sentenced to a maximum of ten years on both counts.

The New York Times reports that the indictment, “stemmed from an investigation initiated by,” the Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Office.

Craig’s attorney’s have called the indictment, “a misguided abuse of prosecutorial discretion” The Washington Post reported on Wednesday. His attorneys also said in their statement that he is not guilty of the charges.

According to the Post article, the indictment stems from work Craig did with former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort “on behalf of the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice in 2012.”

Craig resigned as a partner from the law firm, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, in April of 2018 when amid an investigation into “whether the firm’s lawyers failed to register as foreign lobbyists for their Ukraine engagement.”

The Department of Justice said in their statement an arraignment hearing will be set by the court.
