Propaganda Watch: Russian Social Media Ads–5/26/19

This is part of an ongoing series where I review some of the ads purchased by the Russians. In doing so I hope we can get a better understanding of what they were trying to do, and how to recognize it the next time we’re faced with propaganda.

If you want to follow along, the ads can all be downloaded here. All of today’s ads can be found in the 2015-q4/2015-12 folder.

I’ve learned something–Russians aren’t funny. Or, at best, the Russian idea of American humor isn’t funny. Remember “Nuts News” from last week whose punchline was “Read us or die suffering?” They’re back, and they had one comparatively funny ad where they tried to wrangle the Buzzfeed crowd (p(1)0003962):

Just as we thought they understood the concept of humor, Nuts News posts p(1)0006512:

The “5 year old” part was a typo. There actually was a David Southwick, 45, who tried to kill his wife. This is not normally what I would think of when I was looking for a “Nuts News” story.

It’s not just that group that thinks they’re humorous. The Stop Refugees group I introduced yesterday claims to have humor as part of their repertoire (p(1)0003431):

If there is any humor to “anti-immigration is the only salvation” it didn’t show up that month.

THIS IS AN OPEN THREAD. Have a pleasant Sunday and remember, no matter how bad your jokes are, the Russians’ are worse.
