The news these days is often depressing at worst and frustrating at best. It’s easy to get caught up in the spin cycle and let it get us down. Never fear… The News Blender has you covered. Once a week we feature Something Good and, in return, all you have to do is tell us something good that has happened to you this week, something you are thankful for, a joke, a cute animal story, an inspiring tale of heroics, a Random Act of Kindness… SOMETHING good.

This week’s Something Good is encouragement. When things are tough, there is nothing like having our personal cheering section to remind us that we can do the hard things.

This video of a little boy struggling to break a board in Karate class is a beautiful example of how powerful encouragement is and will put a smile on your face, if not bring a tear to your eye.

I spent quite a few years sitting and watching my son in his Tae Kwon Do class. He made friends, one of whom will be a groomsman in his upcoming wedding, who cheered him on and told him he could do it.

My heart was in my throat many times as I watched him spar with grown men, wriggle out of choke holds, and learn to not pull his punches with the girls in the class. With every belt rank he earned, his confidence grew and eventually, after years of hard work, he earned his black belt. I still remember when he broke his first board and the pride and confidence that he took home after doing so. That board was signed by his instructors and I’m sure he still has it in a box somewhere. Just like my son, this little boy learned a life lesson by persevering until he broke that board. He was successful, at least in part, because of the encouragement and support he received.

Now it’s your turn… Tell me Something Good!
