Propaganda Watch: Russian Social Media Ads–9/7/19

This is part of an ongoing series where I review some of the ads purchased by the Russians. In doing so I hope we can get a better understanding of what they were trying to do, and how to recognize it the next time we’re faced with propaganda.

If you want to follow along, the ads can all be downloaded here. All of today’s ads can be found in the 2016-q2/2016-04 folder.

April 2016 was an insanely busy month for Russian ads. To put it in perspective–it filled up seven pages in my spiral notebook. March 2016 took three, and it was a busy month. There were the “hate the police”, “don’t trust your country”, “hate immigrants”, “hate Hilary”, “love Trump or Berine” ads you’d expect. What I wasn’t expecting was sixty three ads for a new group: Memeopolis. The name says it all. Memes and memes only.

What struck me about P(1)0000517 is that I recognize it from being forwarded so many times in my feed.

P(1)000523 makes me wonder if the woman pictured had any idea she became a Russian ad. Then again, I think that about a lot of them.

I never knew being Player One was such a big deal until ad p(1)0000529:

P(1)0003836 just makes me cringe:

THIS IS AN OPEN THREAD–Take care, and have a pleasant Saturday.
