Propaganda Watch: Russian Social Media Ads–11/17/19

This is part of an ongoing series where I review some of the ads purchased by the Russians. In doing so I hope we can get a better understanding of what they were trying to do, and how to recognize it the next time we’re faced with propaganda.

If you want to follow along, the ads can all be downloaded here. All of today’s ads can be found in the 2016-q2/2016-05 folder.

The May 2016 ads had an interesting relationship with the news. P(1)0002025 talks about the Smithsonian working with another group to preserve the gazebo where Tamir Rice was shot:

It turns out that it was not the Smithsonian preserving the gazebo, but a Chicago area African American history museum.

On the other side of the political spectrum, p(1)0000110 tells of a high school student who was told to remove the American flag from his truck because of an attack on patriotism:

According to this article, the administrators said no flags whatsoever were to be hung from students’ vehicles.

P(1)0002311 says a homeowners association fined a man for having a Marines sticker on his car:

Despite this being a bit more complicated than reported in the ad, the HOA dropped its request nine years prior.

THIS IS AN OPEN THREAD. Take care, and have a great Sunday.
