A personal letter to Ted Cruz
(on the eve of the Senate Impeachment trial vote)

I want to congratulate you on helping Donald Trump*’s election last time. But unlike you, I want to see the principles you once talked about prevail again. Conventions are times to suck up, but given the events of the last three years, I hope you will allow me a moment to talk to you about what is really at stake.

You talked then of 9 year old Caroline who had lost her police officer dad that day in Dallas. You spoke of a man dedicated to his family and his principles. You talked of your own daughter, who was the same age and said your heart was heavy. Is it heavy today? What do you think our thoughts of you are today? What are YOUR thoughts of you today? How could anything ever be ok again?

Maybe it’s because we live in a world where so many others had their lives destroyed by evil, yet you embraced one aspect of that evil in Donald Trump*. Maybe it’s because of the simple question itself that you asked – what if this, right now, is our last time to get it right? Our last moment to do something for our families and our country?

Did we live up to the values we say we believe? I did. Did you, Ted? Did you do all you really could before you folded to the Orange Toad*? That is really what you should be thinking as this election nears. Which way will you go? Which way have you gone?

In 2016, we were not fighting for one particular candidate. Were you, in the end? Each of us wants to be able to tell our kids and grandkids that we did our best for their future and for our country. Will you be able to say that, with a straight face, to your daughter? What will she think of you?

You said “America is more than just a land mass between two oceans. America is an ideal, a simple but powerful idea”. Do you remember those words? You also said, “Freedom matters. For much of human history, government power has been the unavoidable constant in life”. Do you still remember? You said “government decrees and the people obey. But not here”. Where is “here” now, Ted? At the foot of Donald Trump*?

Let’s hear your words once again: “We have no king or queen, we have no dictator, we the people constrain government. Our nation is exceptional because it was built on the five most beautiful and powerful words in the English language, ‘I want to be free’.”

Can you say that today? Will you be able to say that after acquitting Donald Trump*, effectively giving him that dictatorship he so desires? Those words still ring in my ears. What ringing do you hear today?

As you stated back then – “Never has that message been more needed than today”. How prophetic that was. Because those words ARE needed today. But that message is being discarded by you – and by the Republican party – in the name of our wannabe dictator. I still hold those words true to my heart. What do you hold, Ted?

I will paraphrase the you of long ago one last time: “If you love our country, and love your children as much as I hope that you do, stand and speak and vote your conscience (in the Senate Impeachment trial), vote for those who will defend our freedom and will be faithful to the Constitution”.

You do remember the Constitution, don’t you Ted?

I do.
