The news these days is often depressing at worst and frustrating at best. It’s easy to get caught up in the spin cycle and let it get us down. Never fear… The News Blender has you covered. Once a week we feature Something Good and, in return, all you have to do is tell us something good that has happened to you this week, something you are thankful for, a joke, a cute animal story, an inspiring tale of heroics, a Random Act of Kindness… SOMETHING good.

Today’s Good News is about man’s best friend, or more accurately, woman’s best friend and is a reminder to never give up hope.

Monica Mathis lost her dog Hazel three years ago while she was living in Iowa. Now living in Minnesota, Monica was scrolling through her Facebook feed and saw an ad from Motorworks Brewing in Florida that was putting the faces of shelter dogs, ready to be adopted, on their beer cans. They were promoting the “adopt don’t shop” idea and supporting their local shelter.

One of the dogs, called Day Day by the Manatee County animal shelter, caught Monica’s eye – she told Fox9 that she recognized the markings on the dog’s face and her distinctive ears and believed Day Day to be her long lost Hazel. Monica, a bit doubtful because the shelter was in Florida, called immediately, not wanting to lose a chance to get her pup back.

She asked them to check the microchip and, sure enough, it was Hazel. The contact information was out of date – Monica had lost the ability to update it and the shelter could not reach her. Monica also provided pictures and vet records to prove she was the dog’s owner.

Monica said she had thought of Hazel every day and was so lucky the brewery picked her to spotlight. If not for that, Monica knows she likely would not have ever seen Hazel again. But, because they picked Hazel, Monica and Hazel have now been reunited.

Hazel will have to adjust to the cold of St. Paul after living in Florida, but Monica’s love no doubt will keep her warm.

Now it’s your turn… tell me something good!
