It’s Super Tuesday! Or, as we like to say around here, aaaaauuuuugh!
Fourteen states are running their Democratic Primary today, and thirteen are running their Republican Primary (Virginia cancelled theirs). There is one main focus, and that is on the Biden vs. Bernie matchup. After Biden’s conclusive win in South Carolina and the comparatively poor showing in both Nevada and South Carolina, his competition for ideological moderates – Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar – have stepped away and put their support behind him. Biden has also received a slew of endorsements (notably absent former President Obama) and seen a fundraising surge. He has been endorsed by Beto O’Rourke in Texas, which may help his Texan and liberal youth numbers, and Tom Steyer, who was trying to gain some black supporters Biden needs, has also dropped out.
All of this puts the wind firmly at Biden’s back… but he’s up against Bernie’s continued steady campaigning and a multi-year effort by his supporters to normalize socialism, both of which have combined to give Sanders a polling advantage up through this past weekend. Today could have a variety of results… boosting Biden or Bernie into incontrovertible front-runner status, or resulting in a more balanced continuing campaign.
Bloomberg’s financial muscle was put into this contest, with nationwide ads targeted to the Super Tuesday states. Today will be the ultimate test of this strategy; if Mayor Mike can pull first or second place in a few states, it will increase his chances to stay in the race. Warren’s also still in it, with a much greater support level than the forgotten Tulsi Gabbard. Warren is trying to pull a win in Massachusetts, and is hoping to ride her strong support in Hollywood to a good showing out of California. Beyond those locations, she is mainly focused on getting into second place finishes to demonstrate some level of continued viability.
On the Republican side, Bill Weld has been frozen out of all media except for social media, but he’s still on the ballot in many places and the GOP’s effort to show monolithic support for Trump just isn’t happening. The attention there will be on how much of a percentage Weld can chip away in each state, as those percentages will be potential general election gains for a Democrat who chooses to run as a centrist (like Biden is currently doing.)
Some states are holding primaries for positions other than the President.
While some of the states do not have the final totals in, at this point the results in most races are finalized. This will be the last update.
