The news these days is often depressing at worst and frustrating at best. It’s easy to get caught up in the spin cycle and let it get us down. Never fear… The News Blender has you covered. Once a week we feature Something Good and, in return, all you have to do is tell us something good that has happened to you this week, something you are thankful for, a joke, a cute animal story, an inspiring tale of heroics, a Random Act of Kindness… SOMETHING good.

This week’s something good is a random act of kindness is a world that feels rather dark.

Rebecca Mehra, a professional runner, was hailed by an elderly couple in the Safeway parking lot in Bend, Oregon. The lady rolled her window down a crack and, nearly in tears, explained to Rebecca that she and her husband were afraid to go in to the store. They had no family to help them and they needed groceries. The woman, after having waited 45 minutes to find the right person, handed her grocery list and a $100 bill to Rebecca and asked if she could shop for them.

Rebecca, speaking to CBS News after her twitter thread about the experience went viral, said, “It just felt like a no brainer thing to do in the moment.” She continued, “It seems like it’s inspired thousands of people hopefully to check in on their neighbors, check in on their grandparents, and their parents.” Rebecca explained that this experience helped her see how the situation is affecting her community and believes that anyone would do the same in that situation.

Rebecca’s small act of kindness reminds us that we are in a moment where kindness is more important than ever. It is ever the case that any coin that has suffering on one side has kindness, love, and generosity on the other. Hopefully Rebecca’s example will inspire others to look after their neighbors in need.
