The news these days is often depressing at worst and frustrating at best. It’s easy to get caught up in the spin cycle and let it get us down. Never fear… The News Blender has you covered. Once a week we feature Something Good and, in return, all you have to do is tell us something good that has happened to you this week, something you are thankful for, a joke, a cute animal story, an inspiring tale of heroics, a Random Act of Kindness… SOMETHING good.

This week we have a story of recovery and reunion in a time of suffering and isolation.

Yanira Soriano, a 36 year old from Long Island, was 34 weeks pregnant when she was admitted to the hospital with Covid19 on April 2nd. She was put on a ventilator and doctors at Northwell Health, Southside Hospital believed a C-section was necessary to give her a chance to beat the virus and to protect her baby. Baby Walter was delivered the next day and taken to Cohen Children’s Medical Center as his mother fought for her life.

Yanira was in a medically induced coma and on a vent for 11 days, according to MSN. But on Wednesday, amidst cheers from the staff, the new mother was wheeled out of the hospital and met her new baby for the first time as he was place in her arms.

“She was not awake when her baby was born, and did not hear the baby cry or have any opportunity to meet him right after his birth,” said Benjamin Schwartz, chairman of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwell Health, Southside Hospital. He explained that Yanira’s recovery and reunion with her baby is “an incredibly proud moment for not just the department of obstetrics and gynecology, but for Southside Hospital and the entire team that works here.”

He continued, “The fact that this mom not only survived but was able to get out of her wheelchair and walk into her car and hold her baby gives us all incredible hope for our future patients and our existing patients that have COVID disease.”

A mom surviving 11 days on a ventilator and being reunited with her baby is definitely Something Good! Now it’s your turn… Tell me something good!
