The news these days is often depressing at worst and frustrating at best. It’s easy to get caught up in the spin cycle and let it get us down. Never fear… The News Blender has you covered. Once a week, we feature Something Good and, in return, all you have to do is tell us something good that has happened to you this week, something you are thankful for, a joke, a cute animal story, an inspiring tale of heroics, a Random Act of Kindness… SOMETHING good.

Today’s Something Good is a follow-up to a TMSG post featuring Captain Tom Moore from May.

If you recall, Captain Tom turned 100 in April and had a modest plan to raise £1,000 for the NHS by walking 100 laps around his garden. Instead, he ended up raising £37,000,000 and inspired all of the UK with his cheery attitude. He received around 140,000 birthday cards, had a flyover by the Royal Air Force, was promoted to colonel, and received a hand delivered birthday greeting from the Queen.

Since then he’s had all manner of recognition for his part in supporting the NHS and keeping morale up during the pandemic lock down and even started the Captain Tom Moore Foundation, to help support hospices and people dealing with grief.

On Friday, he received another recognition for his service: the Queen knighted him in a ceremony at Windsor Castle.

The Queen used a sword that belonged to her father to knight Moore in the outdoor ceremony that was designed to safeguard both Her Majesty and Captain Tom.

While Captain Tom being knighted was an honor he is worthy of, his legacy will be one of resilience, inspiration, and cheerfulness in dark times. Back in May, he told the BBC, “You’ve all got to remember that we will get through it in the end, it will all be right. For all those people finding it difficult at the moment, the sun will shine on you again and the clouds will go away.”

His generation lived through some pretty tough times and when he says “it will all be right”, one tends to believe it, just as one starts to believe his customary sign off “tomorrow will be a good day”.

Good things happening to good people is definitely something good. Now it’s your turn… Tell me something good!
