If you’re of a certain age, seeing the term “Chocolate Rain” immediately calls one thing to mind – this song:
An early viral video, it’s been viewed more than 127 million times, and ranks with the Bed Intruder and Friday songs for video-driven musical tracks.
This Night Owl is not about that song.
Instead, I direct you to Olten, Switzerland last Friday, when an industrial accident blanketed a nearby community with airborne organic chemicals. A leak developed in a a ventilation line at the Lindt & Spruengli plant, spraying effluent into the air outside. From there, high winds picked up the mist, depositing particulate across the city.
The deposition, while annoying to clean, was not in any way dangerous; it was cocoa nibs, roasted and finely ground… the key ingredient in the manufacture of chocolate.
The leak has been found and repaired. To be completely accurate, the tiny flakes which blanketed the city are more akin to a fine snowfall than a liquid rainfall, but a literal interpretation of the famed song was never expected in any variant of the phases of matter.
But, 2020.
Question of the night: What’s your favorite chocolate candy?
