Sir Sean Connery passed today, and the tributes are coming from throughout the world.
It should come as no surprise that I was a bit of a fan, considering I devoted an Owl to him in the past. As I thought back through the many roles he’s taken, I realized it was tough for me to pick a favorite film. Not so, my wife, who has one clear favorite… and with her in mind, I decided to pen this reworking of a classic Billy Joel tune.
He can kill with a knife, he can wound with a gun
And he can take off your head (there can be only one)
He’s King Richard revealed, at the end of the scene
He’s the best of the Bonds but he’ll always be “Zardoz” to me.
He can lead you through Alcatraz, stop poison gases
He can be a black dragon, a star when he passes
He can steal a whole sub from the Russian Navy
He can stop spaceship drugs but he’ll always be “Zardoz” to me
Oh, he takes care of a kid who has chased dwarves with holes throughout space and through time
Oh, he’ll return as James Bond and beat up Mr. Bean… nobody seems to mind
He can be a clean cop in the midst of corruption
He’s King Arthur addressing romantic interruption
He’s a pulp hero foiling Mr. Holmes’ enemy
He can be Indy’s dad but he’ll always be “Zardoz” to me
Oh, he takes care of a kid who has chased dwarves with holes throughout space and through time
Oh, he’ll return as James Bond and beat up Mr. Bean… nobody seems to mind
He can stop diamond smuggling, bury friends without shame
He can catch altered film to correctly show blame
He can be the lead man for Hitchcock’s film “Marnie”
He can play a great name overwhelmed by his fame
But he’ll always be “Zardoz” to me.
Question of the night: What’s your favorite Connery film?
