The news these days is often depressing at worst and frustrating at best. It’s easy to get caught up in the spin cycle and let it get us down. Never fear… The News Blender has you covered. Once a week we feature Something Good and, in return, all you have to do is tell us something good that has happened to you this week, something you are thankful for, a joke, a cute animal story, an inspiring tale of heroics, a Random Act of Kindness… SOMETHING good.
Today’s Something Good is generosity.
Matthew Montie, a senior on Wakefield-Marenisco Cardinals basketball team, showed notable generosity to his opponent last week.
He noticed a junior on the Dollar Bay Blue Bolts was playing with shoes not designed for basketball. After the final buzzer, Matthew gave his shoes, a pair of LeBron James Nikes, to the opposing player. He didn’t have a chance to speak to the other player but gave the shoes to the athletic director to give to the player who had already gone home.
Matthew told KXAN that he remembered being younger and not being able to afford proper basketball shoes. He had to play in shoes without proper support and rolled his ankles many times. He said, “It feels pretty good to help somebody out, I guess.”
His coach found out about Matthew’s act of kindness after the fact but wasn’t surprised because Matthew is such a “good young man”.
Coach Fetters said, “The kid’s got such a big heart. You know, he would do that for anybody.” He held up Matthew’s example of quiet generosity to the team, saying it made not just Matthew look good but the team, the school, and the whole community look good as well and said how proud he was of Matthew.
Generosity like Matthew showed is a rare thing and definitely something good. Now it’s your turn… Tell me Something Good.
