10 Dead At Colorado Shooting – Updated

On Monday afternoon, a gunman entered a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, Colorado and began shooting. Initial reports provided contrary information and some details remain unconfirmed, but recent updates from the sheriff’s department have clarified the situation.

Ten people were killed in the incident, one of whom was the first officer to arrive on the scene, Eric Talley. Talley was a veteran officer, aged 51, who had been with the Boulder police department since 2010.

The remaining nine victims have not been publicly identified, and their names will not be released until family have been notified.

The shooter has not been identified, but police have confirmed that they have only one suspect in custody, and they were recorded taking a white male with a bald spot into custody. The man had a right leg and a hand which were both deep red (presumably from blood) and had no readily visible tattoos. He was walking with a limp and was taken to a stretcher, which along with the red extremities suggests injury, but was not bleeding profusely enough to leave visible footprints despite being unclothed save for some shorts.

They have also stated there is no active threat to the public, indicating they have strong reason to believe he acted alone.

Police are stating the investigation will likely take at least five days, but have said that they expect to provide more information to the public on Tuesday morning.

This post will be updated as more information becomes available, but anyone with confirmed data – which is to say, information shared either by law enforcement or by journalists working in their professional capacities (as opposed to speculating on Twitter based on second-hand reports) is strongly encouraged to post it in the comment section below, amidst any speculation or discussion about the murders.

UPDATE 1: Police have positively identified all ten victims, but have not released the names of any save officer Talley and will not do so until they have notified all families. Ages of the victim range from 20 to 65.

The suspect has been identified as a 21 year old male pronounced Ahmad Alissa (spelling yet unconfirmed) from Arvada, Colorado. He has been further described as having lived in the United States for “most of his life”. Details of his country of origin and age of emigration have not yet been released.

Talley’s family has issued a statement mourning their loss. Talley was a father of seven children and had recently begun training as a drone operator specifically to avoid having to put himself in direct danger during potential violent actions. That decision had been made in an effort to shield his family from the exact type of situation that arose.

Police have not released the suspect’s motivation, but have confirmed that he was taken to the hospital after a gunshot wound to his leg and is in stable condition, and will be moved to Boulder county jail.
