Propaganda Watch: Russian Social Media Ads–3/6/2021

This is part of an ongoing series where I review some of the ads purchased by the Russians. In doing so I hope we can get a better understanding of what they were trying to do, and how to recognize it the next time we’re faced with propaganda.

The Black Excellence group celebrated excellence and success among the African American community, albeit with some odd results. Instead of pointing readers towards any of the over 100 Black owned bookstores currently operating in the United States, p(1)0004911 featured a store that has been closed for almost four decades:

P(1)0004913 features a child illustrator who started out illustrating his mother’s children’s book, then starting up his own organization. I was able to find the article clipped for the meme (but beware clicking on it, as my computer froze and needed a hard restart after I visited that site). I could not find a record of the organization or the children’s book. I did find a link to a self-published book by his mom published around the time this meme was released:

P(1)0004915 talks about a plus-size woman mocked on Instagram for being overweight who was then hired by Zendaya as a model for her soon-to-be-defunct clothing line:
