The news these days is often depressing at worst and frustrating at best. It’s easy to get caught up in the spin cycle and let it get us down. Never fear… The News Blender has you covered. Once a week we feature Something Good and, in return, all you have to do is tell us something good that has happened to you this week, something you are thankful for, a joke, a cute animal story, an inspiring tale of heroics, a Random Act of Kindness… SOMETHING good.

Today’s something good is a purple unicorn and a kind heart.

In Kenansville, North Carolina, a stray dog kept sneaking into the Dollar General store and attempting to steal a stuffed purple unicorn from the toy aisle. Employees would shoo him out but every time a customer exited, he’d sneak back in and attempt to steal that one toy. Finally, according to WDTN, they closed the store and called animal control.

Joe Newburn, Duplin County Animal Services supervisor, says it’s one of the strangest calls he’s ever been involved in. The dog made a beeline for this purple unicorn with sparkly red hooves every time he got into the store.

Samantha Lane, the responding animal control officer, bought the $10 toy for for pup and ensured he had it when he was checked into the shelter. The one year-old lab mix was named “Sisu” after the dragon in the new Disney film, Raya and the Last Dragon. Sisu happily went with Samantha after he finally got his toy.

Newburn believes Sisu had a similar toy, or perhaps a child had one, in the home he came from. “I don’t know of any other reason why he would focus on the unicorn other than he had one at home. If the store had called and said he tore open dog food, that would make more sense but not hunting for a purple unicorn.”

Newburn says Sisu has curled up with his unicorn every night and loves affection. It’s a puzzle why no one has claimed him. “He’s obviously super smart and even when we got him to the shelter he’s been very obedient. He sits, shakes. Someone should be looking for him.”

But Sisu hasn’t been claimed and was listed as a stray. He was featured on the Duplin County Animal Services Facebook page as being “locked up” for larceny and B & E.

This is what happens when you break into the dollar general consistently to steal the purple unicorn that you layed…

Sisu’s story has a happy ending: The shelter announced that has an adopter and will be going to his forever home. And, according to Crystal Luce, spokesperson for Dollar General, the company will be sending a few extra purple unicorns along with Sisu to his new family, making a donation to the Duplin County Animal Services, and giving a thank you gift to Samantha Lane, the officer who finally got Sisu what he wanted. Crystal added, “We are glad to see Sisu is happy with his new toy!”

An animal control officer who decided $10 was worth spending on a dog who just needed a little bit of comfort ended up making him famous and getting him a forever home. That is something good.

Now it’s your turn… Tell me something good!
