The news these days is often depressing at worst and frustrating at best. It’s easy to let it get us down. Never fear… The News Blender has you covered. Once a week we feature Something Good and, in return, all you have to do is tell us something good that has happened to you this week, something you are thankful for, a joke, a cute animal story, an inspiring tale of heroics, a Random Act of Kindness… SOMETHING good.

Today’s Something Good is Butter.

A stray dog, named Butter was taken in by a Virginia family. Charity Golloway says he just showed up one day and never left.

She made a shelter for the stray next to the house and tucked an electric lamp inside to keep him warm, according to WJHL. One night, around 2 am, the lamp caught fire and Butter, smart pupper that he is, started barking outside Charity’s window when the flames grew.

She heard Butter barking and then, before the fire alarm even went off, heard a window shatter from the heat. “The flames just got big really fast,” Golloway said. “It’s overwhelming actually how fast it happened.”

Charity and her two kids were able to get out of the house and her son was able to extinguish the fire with a garden hose. The house sustained minor damage. In addition to the broken front window there was some melted vinyl siding but no one was hurt and the home was saved.

Butter was a hit with the crew who responded. Justin says Butter was a really nice dog and came up to all the firefighters and played with them.

The fire department arrived a few minutes later to the fire already out and a proud Butter greeting them. Justin Stidham was on the call that night and says Butter saved the Golloway’s home. “If it wasn’t for that dog that night, there’s no way they would have been able to save that house,” he said.

This story would be nice enough if it ended there but it doesn’t.

A picture of Butter and Justin that night went viral and his family recognized him. Turns out “Butter” is actually “Cooper” and he had ran away this summer. His humans contacted Charity and they verified the Golloways had been caring for Cooper.

Charity was sad to see him leave, knowing he had saved her family’s lives but happy that he was to be reunited with his owners. To show her gratitude to the stray who saved the day, she told WJHL that she would be serving Butter a special dinner before he went home – a steak.

A stray dog who just showed up then saves the family who took him in and gets returned to his rightful family thanks to his good deed? That is definitely something good!

Now it’s your turn… Tell me something good.
