On Friday President Biden offered remarks on Increasing the Supply of Semiconductors. The YouTube is 22 minutes and 32 seconds long. His full remarks can be found here.

Intel announced on Friday morning that they had chosen Licking County, Ohio as the home for two “new leading-edge chip factories.”

Intel today announced plans for an initial investment of more than $20 billion in the construction of two new leading-edge chip factories in Ohio.

Immense Impact

As the largest single private-sector investment in Ohio history, the initial phase of the project is expected to create 3,000 Intel jobs and 7,000 construction jobs over the course of the build, and to support tens of thousands of additional local long-term jobs across a broad ecosystem of suppliers and partners. Spanning nearly 1,000 acres in Licking County, just outside of Columbus, the “mega-site” can accommodate a total of eight chip factories – also known as “fabs” – as well as support operations and ecosystem partners. At full buildout, the total investment in the site could grow to as much as $100 billion over the next decade, making it one of the largest semiconductor manufacturing sites in the world.

Planning for the first two factories will start immediately, with construction expected to begin late in 2022. Production is expected to come online in 2025, when the fab will deliver chips using the industry’s most advanced transistor technologies. Ohio will be home to Intel’s first new manufacturing site location in 40 years.

In addition to Intel’s presence in Ohio, the investment is expected to attract dozens of ecosystem partners and suppliers needed to provide local support for Intel’s operations – from semiconductor equipment and materials suppliers to a range of service providers. Investments made by these suppliers will not only benefit Ohio but will have a significant economic impact on the broader U.S. semiconductor ecosystem. As part of today’s announcement, Air Products, Applied Materials, LAM Research and Ultra Clean Technology have indicated plans to establish a physical presence in the region to support the buildout of the site, with more companies expected in the future. Intel News also tweeted out regarding the announced investment in Ohio.

The Governor of Ohio shared the following threaded tweets…

President Biden: *It’s a historic investment for Ohio and one of the largest investments in semiconductor manufacturing in American history. A brand new $20 billion campus outside of Columbus, Ohio. Seven thousand construction jobs. Three thousand full-time jobs. And I was kidding Pat earlier. I said, “I may need a job.” He said, “Well, it’s not bad. You start over at 100,000 bucks.” (Inaudible.) But I got to get some training. (Laughter.) But, look, at the singular — look, to be able to say, “Made in Ohio. Made in America.” It’s what we used to always be able to say 25, 30 years ago. That’s what this is about.

*The official White House transcript has the word “it’s,” before “a historic investment”; the Bloomberg closed caption reads as “this”. I’ve listened too many times and now I hear both ways…*

The video clip is 1 minute and 1 second long.

CEO of Intel Pat Gelsinger says: This is what we’re announcing today in Ohio. We’ll be announcing today the first $20 billion–one of these modules. The full site will be eight modules that we would build out over the full buildout of the site. This is about 1,000 acres that we’ve taken here. But we also have priority on building out potentially more at the site. If we build out the full site over the decade, which is our objective based on finishing the *CHIPS Act to build out the full site. It would be this module–eight sites, eight full modules, which would be well over 10,000 jobs, over 100 billion of total investment over the course of the decade. And this becomes the most leading and largest semiconductor manufacturing location in the world, as we progress.

President Biden: This really makes a gigantic difference, not just for the state of Ohio, but in terms of our competitive advantage. And by the way, this is going to have a gigantic impact on bringing back manufacturing to the heartland too. I mean, across the board in the Midwest.

Someone says: Nobody’s calling us the Rust Belt anymore.

The group of people chuckled at the joke…

The White House published the following fact-sheet; Biden-Harris Administration Bringing Semiconductor Manufacturing Back to America

[Regarding the *CHIPS ACT*]…

To accelerate this progress, the President is urging Congress to pass legislation to strengthen U.S. research and development and manufacturing for critical supply chains, including semiconductors. The Senate passed the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act (USICA) in June and the Administration is working with the House and Senate to finalize this legislation. It includes full funding for the CHIPS for America Act, which will provide $52 billion to catalyze more private-sector investments and continued American technological leadership.*

The NYPD News Twitter account announced on Friday, that 22 year-old Police Officer Jason Rivera was shot and killed after responding to a 911 call.

Officer Wilbert Mora, 27 years old, was also shot as of yesterday he was still listed in critical condition.

NBC News reported that the incident occurred after the pair responded to a 911 call involving a woman and her son. They were shot without warning when they went done a narrow hallway. A third Officer arrived shooting the suspected shooter in the arm and head. Early reports had the shooter dead at the scene but later corrected the record to him listed in critical condition.

The pair were responding to a 911 call about a woman having a dispute with her son at 6:15 p.m., police said.

When they arrived, the woman and one son were at the front of the apartment. The two officers were fired upon without warning when they went down a narrow hallway to the rear bedroom where the suspect was, police added.

“As our first officer approached the bedroom, the door swings open and numerous shots are fired, striking both officers,” James Essig, chief of detectives, told a news conference at Harlem Hospital.

The suspect, Lashawn Mcneil, 47, was then shot in the arm and head by a third officer, Essig said.

Mcneil was in critical condition, according to a police spokesperson early Saturday. Several spokespeople for the department initially said the suspect had died.

The White House released a joint statement by President Biden and Vice President Harris:

The constitutional right established in Roe v. Wade nearly 50 years ago today is under assault as never before. It is a right we believe should be codified into law, and we pledge to defend it with every tool we possess. We are deeply committed to protecting access to health care, including reproductive health care—and to ensuring that this country is not pushed backwards on women’s equality.

In recent years, we have seen efforts to restrict access to reproductive health care increase at an alarming rate. In Texas, Mississippi, and many other states around the country, access to reproductive health care is under attack. These state restrictions constrain the freedom of all women. And they are particularly devastating for those who have fewer options and fewer resources, such as those in underserved communities, including communities of color and many in rural areas.

The Biden-Harris Administration strongly supports efforts to codify Roe, and we will continue to work with Congress on the Women’s Health Protection Act. All people deserve access to reproductive health care regardless of their gender, income, race, zip code, health insurance status, immigration status, disability, or sexual orientation. And the continued defense of this constitutional right is essential to our health, safety, and progress as a nation.

We must ensure that our daughters and granddaughters have the same fundamental rights that their mothers and grandmothers fought for and won on this day, 49 years ago—including leaders like the late Sarah Weddington, whose successful arguments before the Supreme Court led to the landmark Roe v. Wade decision in 1973.

At this pivotal moment, we recommit to strengthening access to critical reproductive health care, defending the constitutional right established by Roe, and protecting the freedom of all people to build their own future.

President Biden: But when we start moving stuff faster through our ports, when bridges don’t have weight restrictions, when there’s less traffic on our roads because there are more roads to travel on and people aren’t backed up bumper-to-bumper and more capacity in our rails, that’s how we resolve the supply chain problem and get goods to people and get them to them quicker and — quicker and cheaper.
