By the numbers, The Supremes were the greatest of all the girl groups, ever. With more number one hits than any other girl group before or since, they were also the first to score five consecutive number one charting songs.
From 1967 to 1970, their name changed to Diana Ross and The Supremes, often stylized as Diana Ross and the Supremes (lower case t in ‘the’). After Diana Ross left the group in 1970, The Supremes had a handful of hits without her, but lacked the punch the group had with Ross as lead vocalist. Diana Ross went on to have a stellar solo career.
