Statement from President Joe Biden on Cancer Moonshot Announcement

In my Unity Agenda I announced in my State of the Union address last year, I called on Congress to establish and fund the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H).  Members on both sides of the aisle answered my call, and already, ARPA-H is meeting its mission to create breakthroughs in how to prevent, detect, and treat cancer and other diseases. At a time when most people thought bipartisan action wasn’t possible anymore, we’re proving that making progress on our toughest health challenges like cancer is something every American can get behind. That’s why I made it a central pillar of my Unity Agenda for the nation, and why Jill and I reignited the Cancer Moonshot, to end cancer as we know it.

Today, we’re taking an important step forward in achieving that ambitious goal, with a new ARPA-H program to use mRNA technology to train our own immune systems to fight cancer, autoimmune disorders, and infectious diseases more effectively.

Over the past few years, COVID-19 vaccines developed using mRNA technology have saved millions of lives around the world. These therapies, which were kickstarted by American scientists at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), represent the power of American ingenuity and innovation. Now, a skilled team at Emory University in Atlanta will work to adapt these technologies to turn more cancers into curable diseases. This is a bold endeavor that has the potential to transform the fight against cancer and other difficult diagnoses.

I’ve long said that America can be defined by a single word: Possibilities. My Unity Agenda is bringing both parties together in that spirit — to get big things done for the American people. There is more work to do, but there’s nothing we can’t do if we do it together.

As Part of President Biden’s Unity Agenda, Biden Cancer Moonshot Announces Launch of ARPA-H’s CUREIT Project Led by Emory University to Develop New Tools to Strengthen the Immune System and Save Lives

New ARPA-H project aims to improve patient outcomes across cancer and a broad range of diseases, using mRNA technology to train our immune systems to be more effective

Today, the Biden Cancer Moonshot is announcing the launch of “Curing the Uncurable via RNA-Encoded Immunogene Tuning” (CUREIT), a project that aims to develop generalizable mRNA platforms that can be harnessed to train the immune system to more effectively fight cancer and other diseases, ultimately saving lives. CUREIT will be led by a team at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, with up to $24 million in new funding from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H).

Last year, as part of his Unity Agenda, President Biden worked with Democrats and Republicans in Congress to establish and fund ARPA-H to drive breakthroughs to prevent, detect, and treat cancer and other diseases. Through CUREIT, ARPA-H is now moving aggressively to deliver on their mission, and to advance the goals of the Biden Cancer Moonshot and the President’s Unity Agenda.

The goal of CUREIT is to create a toolbox of mRNA and related technologies that could be used to “turn on” helpful immune responses, like prompting immune cells to target and attack tumors. Other applications could extend to autoimmune disorders, transplants, and infectious diseases. COVID-19 vaccines developed using mRNA technology platforms have saved millions of lives in the United States and around the world. A toolbox of mRNA platforms offers the potential to transform the fight against cancer and other difficult diseases.

Today’s award builds on important progress ARPA-H has made this summer. Last month, ARPA-H announced the launch of its first program targeting cancer – the Precision Surgical Interventions Program – to develop novel technologies that will allow surgeons to remove cancerous tumors with more precision and accuracy, resulting in better health outcomes for Americans facing cancer. ARPA-H also recently announced the Novel Innovations for Tissue Regeneration in Osteoarthritis (NITRO) program to develop new ways of helping the human body repair its own joints, with the goal of revolutionizing treatment for osteoarthritis — a common and often very painful condition where bones and cartilage break down.

CUREIT is the first award from the ARPA-H Open Broad Agency Announcement, which seeks transformative ideas for health research breakthroughs and technological advancements. The application period is open until March 2024 and future projects will be funded on a rolling basis.

From Thursday…

From the article:

U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy today toured and touted a Syracuse factory that will benefit from federal legislation he voted against.

McCarthy, in town for a political fundraiser, stopped first at JMA Wireless’s new 5G equipment factory on Syracuse’s South Side. McCarthy said JMA is an example of American companies building critical technology in the U.S. McCarthy last year voted no on the federal infrastructure bill that contained a “buy American” provision that JMA said will boost its business.

McCarthy also opposed the CHIPS and Science Act, which Micron Technology said is essential to its plan to invest up to $100 billion in a semiconductor plant in the town of Clay.

Standing before a window overlooking JMA’s factory floor, McCarthy said today he voted against the bills because private industry, not the government, should be deciding what to invest in.

“I don’t want government controlling and picking the winners and losers,” McCarthy said. “I actually like the private sector, exactly what JMA is doing. It’s their investment of $50 million that created something, and now government can be a partner.”

Micron recently applied for federal money from the CHIPS Act to build semiconductor fabrication plants, or fabs, in Clay and at the company’s headquarters in Boise, Idaho. The applications were revealed in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Micron did not say how much it is seeking in federal funds, but has said that the project in Clay can’t happen without a substantial investment from the federal government.
