Remarks by Vice President Harris on the Iranian Ballistic Missile Attack Against Israel

So, today, Iran launched approximately 200 ballistic missiles at Israel in a reckless and brazen attack.  I condemn this attack unequivocally.

I am clear-eyed: Iran is a destabilizing, dangerous force in the Middle East, and today’s attack on Israel only further demonstrates that fact.

Earlier today, I was in the Situation Room with President Biden and our national security team as we monitored the attack in real time and ensured that the protection of U.S. personnel in the region is paramount.  I fully support President Biden’s order for the U.S. military to shoot down Iranian missiles targeting Israel, just as we did in April.

We are still assessing the impact, but initial indications are that Israel, with our assistance, was able to defeat this attack.  Our joint defenses have been effective, and this operation and successful cooperation saved many ic- — innocent lives.

As I have said, I will always ensure Israel has the ability to defend itself against Iran and Iran-backed terrorist militias.  My commitment to the security of Israel is unwavering.

And let us be clear: Iran is not only a threat to Israel; Iran is also a threat to American personnel in the region, American interests, and innocent civilians across the region who suffer at the hands of Iran-based and -backed terrorist proxies.

We will never hesitate to take whatever action is necessary to defend U.S. forces and interests against Iran and Iran-backed terrorists.  And we will continue to work with our allies and partners to disrupt Iran’s aggressive behavior and hold them accountable.

Thank you.

U.S. Assets in Mediterranean Again Helped Defend Israel Against Iranian Missiles

Iran attacked Israel earlier today with a barrage of approximately 200 ballistic missiles. While most of those missiles were destroyed before reaching their target, some did impact and cause minimal damage, said the Pentagon press secretary during a briefing today.

“We condemn these reckless attacks by Iran, and we call on Iran to halt any further attacks, including from its proxy forces,” said Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder. “During the attack, the U.S. military coordinated closely with the Israeli Defense Forces to help defend Israel.”

Today’s attack was nearly twice the scope of a similar attack April 13 and 14, said Ryder. And like in April, the U.S. again assisted in defending Israel.

Two Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, the USS Cole and USS Bulkeley, both deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean, fired a dozen interceptors at incoming Iranian ballistic missiles as part of defending Israel. At this time, Ryder said, it is unknown if those interceptors took down any of the missiles.

Ryder also said initial assessments are that all the missiles fired were actually launched from Iran, not from proxy states, and Iran did indeed plan to cause a significant amount of harm in Israel.

“You don’t launch that many missiles at a target without the intent of hitting something,” Ryder said. “Just like the last time, their intent is to cause destruction. And so, fortunately … Israel has very significant air defense capabilities, and the U.S., of course, played a role in helping on that front as well.”

Initial indications, Ryder said, are that there was minimal damage on the ground and Israel was able to defend itself against the Iranian attack successfully.

Ryder also said, no U.S. personnel were injured or harmed during the Iranian missile attack.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III communicated with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant at least twice today, both before the attack and during the attack, Ryder said.

“He reaffirmed the United States ironclad commitment to the defense of Israel and underscored that the U.S. remains well-postured throughout the Middle East region to protect U.S. forces and defend Israel in the face of threats from Iran and Iran-backed terrorist organizations,” Ryder said.

Hurricane Helene Tweets

Remarks by President Biden Before an Interagency Briefing on Response to Hurricane Helene; the YouTube is 5 minutes and 51 seconds long.

Now, in the storm’s wake, I’ve directed my team, including the leadership in key departments and agencies all across the government, to send every — and I mean this seriously — every available resource that we have at our disposal to the affected region. And that’s why we’re here today with the Cabinet and those acting in Cabinet but — because some are deployed already — the Department of Defense, Agriculture, HHS, Transportation, Energy, Homeland Security, EPA, Commerce, Small Business Association, and the U.S. Carmy the [Army] Corps of Engineers. We need to be all working together, and that’s what we’re going to talk about — that continued coordination we have going on.

I’ve been in frequent contact with the governors and other leaders in the impacted areas, and we have to jump-start this recovery process. People are scared to death. People wonder whether they’re going to make it.

We still haven’t heard from a whole lot of people. This is urgent. People have to know how to know how to get the information they need.

FBI Releases 2023 Crime in the Nation Statistics

The FBI released detailed data on over 14 million criminal offenses for 2023 reported to the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program by participating law enforcement agencies. More than 16,000 state, county, city, university and college, and tribal agencies, covering a combined population of 94.3% inhabitants, submitted data to the UCR Program through the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) and the Summary Reporting System.

The FBI’s crime statistics estimates, based on reported data for 2023, show that national violent crime decreased an estimated 3.0% in 2023 compared to 2022 estimates:

Releases 2023 Crime in the Nation Statistics. 09/23/2024.
  • Murder and non-negligent manslaughter recorded a 2023 estimated nationwide decrease of 11.6% compared to the previous year.
  • In 2023, the estimated number of offenses in the revised rape category saw an estimated 9.4% decrease.
  • Aggravated assault figures decreased an estimated 2.8% in 2023.
  • Robbery showed an estimated decrease of 0.3% nationally.

In 2023, 16,009 agencies participated in the hate crime collection, with a population coverage of 95.2%. Law enforcement agencies submitted incident reports involving 11,862 criminal incidents and 13,829 related offenses as being motivated by bias toward race, ethnicity, ancestry, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender, and gender identity.

To publish a national trend, the FBI’s UCR Program used a dataset of reported hate crime incidents and zero reports submitted by agencies reporting six or more common months or two or more common quarters (six months) of hate crime data to the FBI’s UCR Program for both 2022 and 2023. According to this dataset, reported hate crime incidents decreased 0.6% from 10,687 in 2022 to 10,627 in 2023.
