  • The powerful and “catastrophic” storm, currently a Category 4 hurricane, is expected to make landfall late tonight. An NBC News forecast predicts landfall sometime between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. tomorrow.
  • The National Hurricane Center warned that preparations to protect life and property, including evacuations, should be “rushed to completion this morning,” before the weather worsens this afternoon.
  • Storm surge warnings cover almost the entirety of Florida’s western coast and there are storm warnings across much of the state, including the east coast. An area of coastline between Tampa and Fort Myers could see inundation of up to 15 feet.
  • At 9 a.m. ET, Milton was 230 miles southwest of Tampa, with sustained winds of 155 mph, and is moving northeast at 16 mph.
  • This storm will track across Florida from west to east. In Orlando and the surrounding area, forecasters warned of up to 15 inches of rain and said the city and the region face an “extreme flooding rain threat.”

Before I begin, I want to say we’re prepared for another horrible hurricane to hit Florida.  I’ve directed my team to do everything it can to save lives and help the communities before, during, and after this hurricane. 

The most important message today for all those who may be listening to this in the impacted areas is listen to the local authorities, follow safety instruction, including evacuation orders.  This is serious.  And you got to be safe, because people are dying.  People have died so far — not from this hurricane, but from the last one.

Studies show community of colors — cl- — community of — of color have been the hardest hit.  One study showed Black children were at least two times more likely to have elevated levels of lead in their blood than children of other racial groups.  We have an obligation to make things right.
