Tariffs

So, yesterday was the start of the 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

The stock market ended in the negative.

Just after market close the Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnik told Fox Entertainment host Larry Kudlow that today there might be an announcement that pulls back on the tariffs.

Canada tightly regulates the banking industry, and it requires various government approvals before a foreign-owned bank can open in the country. But US banks have been operating in Canada for well over a century; the Canadian Bankers Association, an industry group, said in a February statement that “there are 16 U.S.-based bank subsidiaries and branches with around C$113 billion in assets currently operating in Canada” and that “U.S. banks now make up approximately half of all foreign bank assets in Canada.”

Tyler Meredith, former head of economic and fiscal policy for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, noted on social media in February that Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, US Bank, JPMorgan, and Northern Trust are among the US banks with current Canadian operations. They serve not only customers with cross-border business activities, but also Canada’s domestic retail market. U.S. banks now make up approximately half of all foreign bank assets in Canada.

Let me explain: blanket tariffs impact all items. Not just the finished product, but components that go inside the finished product. So, even if companies moved here, they’d still pay tariffs.

I think that’s the most frustrating thing about all of this. If a product says made in America, that doesn’t always mean all parts needed for that product were purchased in America.

Blanket tariffs = price increases on everything.

Address to the Joint Session of Congress

Last night we watched President Shitshow hold a campaign rally hosted by the Republican’s in Congress.

To be fair, we didn’t hear anything new. He spoke too long as he typically does, doubled and tripled down on things that are wrong, and his seals clapped for him.

I’m gonna totally by my own choice skip highlights and post the CNN fact-check:

Okay I lied. I will share a couple of highlights.

Once again during the rally speech he told the audience and the world that President Elon Musk was the head of DOGE.

A few moments later:

At some point, a Judge or Judges are going to force the admin to pick a head of DOGE, is it President Musk or is it Amy Gleason?

Rep. Al Green (D-TX) was escorted out of the Shitshow’s campaign speech; his crime was heckling him and then refusing to sit down.

This is a whataboutism but I’m gonna post it anyway…

In Other News:

Democratic Rep. Sylvester Turner has died. No cause of death has been reported so far. He was in attendance at the Shitshow’s campaign rally on Tuesday. News outlets are reporting that he did suffer some type of medical emergency following the speech.

He was 70 years old. May he Rest in Peace.
