Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is scheduled to meet with China trade reps., according to a press release from the Treasury Department:

WASHINGTON — On May 8, Secretary of the Treasury Scott K.H. Bessent will travel to Switzerland.

“Economic security is national security, and President Donald J. Trump is leading the way both at home and abroad for a stronger, more prosperous America,” said Secretary Bessent. “I look forward to productive talks as we work towards rebalancing the international economic system towards better serving the interests of the United States.”

During Secretary Bessent’s visit to Switzerland, he will meet with President Karin Keller-Sutter of Switzerland, during which the Secretary will follow up on their recent meeting on the sidelines of the recent World Bank Group (WBG) – International Monetary Fund (IMF) Spring Meetings. 

While in Switzerland, Secretary Bessent will also meet with the lead representative on economic matters from the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

Inflation for March was 2.4 percent according to BLS.gov.

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) decreased 0.1 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis in March, after rising 0.2 percent in February, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 2.4 percent before seasonal adjustment.

The index for energy fell 2.4 percent in March, as a 6.3-percent decline in the index for gasoline more than offset increases in the indexes for electricity and natural gas. The food index, in contrast, rose 0.4 percent in March as the food at home index increased 0.5 percent and the food away from home index rose 0.4 percent over the month.

The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.1 percent in March, following a 0.2-percent increase in February. Indexes that increased over the month include personal care, medical care, education, apparel, and new vehicles. The indexes for airline fares, motor vehicle insurance, used cars and trucks, and recreation were among the major indexes that decreased in March.

The all items index rose 2.4 percent for the 12 months ending March, after rising 2.8 percent over the 12 months ending February. The all items less food and energy index rose 2.8 percent over the last 12 months, the smallest 12-month increase since March 2021. The energy index decreased 3.3 percent for the 12 months ending March. The food index increased 3.0 percent over the last year.

It should be noted that the above release was prior to “Liberation day”. April’s CPI release is due to drop on May 13th.

Random users of twitter seem to think if Powell is so worried about inflation, why is he not lowering rates…

Let me explain:

Lowering rates is to increase spending, that’s it, that’s it job. It’s designed to push the “consumer” which also includes businesses not just regular spenders, to take out more loans, to spend more money in order to keeping money flowing into our economy.

There is a fine line and once the rates are lowered and spending aka loaning more money aka “buying on credit” increases so can inflation. So, right now, with the tariffs paused in part and not paused at all, the Fed, can’t lower rates, it’s too soon.

I don’t see anything from MSNBC that triggered him. At the last minute Aaron Rupar found the triggering event…
