TNB Night Owl: My Top 31 Soundtrack Movie Countdown!

This one was wild. I think I was 9 or 10 when my brothers, my older brother’s girlfriend, and her sister took me to a special Halloween drive-in screening. My parents knew, but they didn’t really get the movie until years later when I made my mom watch it on tape. Luckily, she was already a Tim Curry fan, so she forgave the chaotic, outrageous nature of the film—and even laughed a few times.

But for me, it was the audience experience that made it unforgettable. People were yelling lines at the screen (“Say it!” when Frank introduces himself, “Asshole!” at Brad, “Slut!” at Janet), tossing rice during the wedding, holding up lighters and shouting during “There’s a Light,” and of course dancing in the aisles to the Time Warp. It wasn’t just a movie—it was an interactive rock show, a party, and a little bit of mischief all rolled together.

That energy, combined with Tim Curry’s voice and the music that just didn’t sound like anything else I owned, is what pushed me to grab the soundtrack. It was the first time I realized a film’s songs could live just as loudly offscreen as they did on it.

I’ll be linking to each soundtrack’s Wikipedia page if you want to dig deeper, rediscover the track listings, or argue with your own memory of what played during that prom scene.

And don’t worry — this won’t be the last time we visit movie soundtracks. 🎶
