Puddle's day today includes...

The White House listed the event on his schedule as "A New Golden Age Summit".

And the National Medal of Science awards goes to:

  • Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk
  • Google co-founder Sergey Brin
  • Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang
  • AMD CEO Lisa Su

And the National Medal of Technology and Innovation awards goes to:

  • Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell
  • Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella

Nothing says “a new golden age” quite like awarding medals to a bunch of people who have tossed wads of cash Puddle’s way.

Awkward

Vice President No Personality made the remarks during a press conference:

No Personality:

In the last year, Microsoft, and I want to be clear about the data.

Microsoft laid off last year 6,000 American workers at the same time the company benefited from 6,300 H-1B visas and almost 3,000 green cards.

If you do the math, for every worker that Microsoft laid off, they replace that worker with one and a half foreign indentured servants.

He was asked about the awkward moment during the Q&A:

Coffee Fueled Fact Check:

Reuters (05/13/2025):

Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab said on Tuesday it was laying off less than 3% of its workforce, or around 6,000 employees, as the technology giant looks to rein in costs while funneling billions of dollars into its ambitious bet on artificial intelligence.

The cuts will be across all levels and geographies and are likely the largest since Microsoft laid off 10,000 employees in 2023. The company let a small number of staff go in January over performance-related issues, but the new cuts are not related to that, according to CNBC, which first reported the news.

CFO Drive (07/28/2025):

Dive Brief:

  • Microsoft — which has been drawn into the crossfire around the tech industry’s use of the H-1B visa program that allows U.S. employers to employ foreign skilled workers in specialty occupations — rejected criticism which tied its recent layoffs to the company’s reliance on foreign worker visas.
  • “Our H-1B applications are in no way related to the recent job eliminations in part because employees on H-1B’s also lost their roles. In the past 12 months, 78% of the petitions we filed were extensions for existing employees and not new employees coming to the U.S.,” the company said in a statement emailed to CFO Dive by a spokesperson.
  • Vice President JD Vance last week called out the tech company for laying off American workers while relying heavily on immigrant labor through the visa program, questioning the economic logic and ethics of the dual moves, Newsweek reported. “I don’t want companies to fire 9,000 American workers and then to go and say, ‘We can’t find workers here in America,’” Vance reportedly said at a bipartisan event Wednesday.

So, to sum up: The 6,000 layoffs weren't all U.S. jobs, and the H-1B applications weren't all for new hires.

And that's where I wrap for today. I got adulting to do.
