Singin’ in the Rain isn’t just a movie musical — it’s a Technicolor love letter to the moment Hollywood found its voice. Day 8 takes us on a trip down Old Hollywood memory lane, when silent films reigned supreme and the “talkie” was still a novelty. Gene Kelly teaches us how to “Sing in the Rain,” Donald O’Connor makes us laugh until our sides ache, and Debbie Reynolds sparkles as the behind-the-scenes singer promised her big break. Meanwhile, Jean Hagen hilariously schemes to keep her own shrill voice hidden, and Cyd Charisse steals the screen in that slightly-out-of-place dream sequence with legs that seem to go on forever.
I debated for days whether to include this one in my very first soundtrack countdown — but leaving it out just didn’t feel right. Singin’ in the Rain was my favorite musical as a kid. I saw it at the Fox Theater for my fifth birthday (nowhere near April, but hey, who’s counting when there’s cake and popcorn?). I dressed up for the occasion, got utterly hooked, and promptly wore out the soundtrack my mom found on vinyl. Then came the cassette. Then the CD. And now? It lives forever in my Spotify downloads.
