Marvel movies aren’t exactly known for leaning on ‘70s AM gold, but Guardians of the Galaxy blew that stereotype into orbit. James Gunn’s clever use of Star-Lord’s “Awesome Mix Vol. 1” turned a fun space romp into something that felt personal — as if the characters were carrying around their own memories in the form of mixtape magic. Every track had a purpose, whether it was making a fight scene unexpectedly joyful or breaking your heart in the quiet moments.
The whole playlist feels like your coolest friend’s glove compartment tape collection circa 1978, the kind you’d play so loud the speakers crackled. It’s the only soundtrack on this list that I don’t physically own — not because I don’t love it, but because I already had every track in my own playlist before the movie came out. The only thing more surprising than its track list was how perfectly it worked for a big-budget sci-fi adventure.
I’ll be linking to each soundtrack’s Wikipedia page if you want to dig deeper, rediscover the track listings, or argue with your own memory of what played during that prom scene.
And don’t worry — this won’t be the last time we visit movie soundtracks. 🎶
