Number 17 on the list is all about soul—Dublin style. The Commitments (1991) follows a ragtag group of working-class Dubliners who decide the best way to escape their day jobs is by forming “the hardest-working band in the world.” I saw it in theaters when it came out and loved every minute. I even bought the soundtrack, which was on repeat for months. My favorite track was their version of Chain of Fools—loud, raw, and full of energy—but the whole album is stacked, from “Mustang Sally” to “Try a Little Tenderness.” The movie is funny, gritty, and a little messy—just like the band itself—and the soundtrack is pure, foot-stomping, sing-at-the-top-of-your-lungs joy.
I’ll be linking to each soundtrack’s Wikipedia page if you want to dig deeper, rediscover the track listings, or argue with your own memory of what played during that prom scene.
And don’t worry — this won’t be the last time we visit movie soundtracks. 🎶
