Day 14 is a two-for-one, because there was no way I could separate The Breakfast Club (1985) from Pretty in Pink (1986). I owned both soundtracks, and they basically lived on repeat for a good chunk of my teenage years. I could never decide which one I liked more, so with my trusty dual-recording stereo, I made my own mixtape — the best of both worlds on one cassette. Honestly, that tape probably wore out before the actual store-bought ones did.
With The Breakfast Club, it’s all about Simple Minds’ Don’t You (Forget About Me) — the fist-in-the-air anthem that still defines the ‘80s. Every time I hear it, I’m right back in that high school library with the misfits.
And Pretty in Pink? That one brought us OMD’s If You Leave — the ultimate prom ballad — and The Psychedelic Furs reminding us that sometimes love stories don’t tie up in a neat bow.
Together, these two soundtracks were like the ultimate John Hughes mixtape: teenage angst, rebellion, hope, and heartbreak pressed onto vinyl.
I’ll be linking to each soundtrack’s Wikipedia page if you want to dig deeper, rediscover the track listings, or argue with your own memory of what played during that prom scene.
And don’t worry — this won’t be the last time we visit movie soundtracks. 🎶
