Russia taking Crimea “worst real estate deal” ever.

I googled this and found a good breakdown of how the annexation happened from PBS News:

In 2013-14, a massive popular uprising gripped Ukraine for weeks, eventually forcing pro-Moscow President Victor Yanukovych from office. Amid the turmoil, Russian President Vladimir Putin pounced, sending armed troops without insignia to overrun Crimea.

Putin later called a referendum in Crimea to join Russia that Ukraine and the West dismissed as illegal.

Russia’s relations with the West plummeted to new lows. The United States, the European Union and other countries imposed sanctions on Moscow and its officials.

Moscow’s illegal annexation of Crimea on March 18, 2014, was recognized only by countries such as North Korea and Sudan. In Russia, it touched off a wave of patriotism, and “Krym nash!” — “Crimea is ours!” — became a rallying cry.

The move sent Putin’s popularity soaring. His approval rating, which had declined to 65% in January 2014, shot to 86% in June, according to the Levada Center, an independent Russian pollster.

Putin has called the peninsula “a sacred place” and has prosecuted those who publicly argue it is part of Ukraine — particularly the Crimean Tatars, who strongly opposed the annexation.

I fear that if our country was invaded, our defense would be determined on what state was taken. Even then, I’m not sure President Tough Guy Loser would lift a finger to prevent it.

During his meetings yesterday he was caught on a hot mic saying that he’s sure “he wants to make a deal with me” adding “as crazy as that sounds”.

He’s having such “fun” with his takeover of DC., “restaurants” are “bursting”.

D.C. restaurants saw a more than 25% drop in diners in the days following President Donald Trump’s takeover of the city’s police department, according to a WUSA9 analysis of reservation numbers.

On Monday, the day Trump announced he would invoke the D.C. Home Rule Act and federalize the city’s police department  for the first time in history, online reservations in the District dropped by 16% compared to the same date in 2024, according to data from OpenTable. On Tuesday, as the National Guard began being mobilized in the District, reservations were 27% below their 2024 levels. On Wednesday they were down 31%.

Prior to this month, D.C.’s restaurant industry – one of the worst hit in the country by pandemic shutdowns – had seen 11 consecutive months of year-over-year improvement in reservation numbers. As of Sunday, the city stands nearly alone among the largest 20 U.S. cities tracked by OpenTable in having a drop in August dining reservations compared to last year. Only Las Vegas, which has seen its own economy buffeted by Trump’s immigration and trade policies, has seen fewer diners this month than August 2024.

Googles told me, that New Jersey’s energy prices are up 20 percent not 28 percent. Googles also shared EIA.gov data with me, which is where most energy peeps get their information from.

EIA.gov says:

In 2023, natural gas and nuclear power fueled 91% of New Jersey’s total electricity generation.

Natural gas and nuclear energy account for almost all of New Jersey’s electricity net generation. In 2023, natural gas accounted for 49% of New Jersey’s total electricity generation and nuclear power provided 42%. Natural gas and nuclear energy together have fueled more than 90% of New Jersey’s total electricity generation in every year since 2011.58 Nuclear power’s contribution declined in recent years following the permanent shutdown of the state’s Oyster Creek single-reactor nuclear power plant in 2018. Oyster Creek was the nation’s oldest operating nuclear power reactor at the time.59,60 Following the closure of Oyster Creek, New Jersey provided financial support for the state’s three nuclear power reactors at its two remaining nuclear power plants to prevent their closures.61,62,63 Renewable resources supplied 8% of New Jersey’s total generation in 2023. Solar energy, at both utility-scale (1 megawatt or larger) and small-scale (less than 1 megawatt) facilities, accounted for almost 90% of New Jersey’s renewable electricity generation. The rest was produced from biomass, with small amounts from wind and hydropower.64 New Jersey’s last two coal-fired power plants shut down in 2022.65
