Trump’s shocking announcement was in stark contrast to a sweeping Russia sanctions law he signed last month that aimed at clamping down on the oil and gas revenues that fuel Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The law Trump signed last month envisions sanctions on Russian officials, banks and a shadow fleet of tankers and bans all new U.S. investment in Russia and the handling of sovereign debt.
It also directed Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the top five importers of Russian oil or natural gas, with an exception for countries that import less than 15% of Russia’s natural gas exports and have taken significant steps to reduce those imports.
The U.S. has not imported Russian oil or gas since 2022, when the Biden administration banned the imports because of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The saga actually began several days ago, when conspiracy theories about Talarico’s flu-induced nine-day absence from the campaign trail began to morph into desperate conspiracies. And I'm in full agreement with you that this deal is not actually deleterious to bringing peace. In fact, it works towards peace. And I believe he's showing that. He's going to be able to work a deal here.
I fully trust him. He did it with Venezuela. He did it with, uh, he's doing it with Canada, and he did it with Greenland.
So I think we're going to see some historic wins, and President Trump is going to deliver that. We just have to make sure we continue winning on these races.
