Propaganda Watch: Russian Social Media Ads–1/12/2020

This is part of an ongoing series where I review some of the ads purchased by the Russians. In doing so I hope we can get a better understanding of what they were trying to do, and how to recognize it the next time we’re faced with propaganda.

If you want to follow along, the ads can all be downloaded here. All of today’s ads can be found in the 2016-q2/2016-05 folder.

People were encouraged to show up at Houston’s Library of Islamic Knowledge on May 21, 2016, to “Save Islamic Knowledge”. From what, the ads didn’t say. P(1)0003655:

The protest was successful and drew over fifty attendees. Or, I should say, counterprotest. The Russia-backed “Heart of Texas” group had announced a rally to “Stop the Islamification of Texas” and drew about ten protesters. While I wasn’t able to find the specific ad mentioned in the article, I found one file with the text quoted, but the actual ad itself redacted. I assume the announcement of the protest was in that visual. P(1)0002752:

There was also one man armed with a bubble blower, but it’s unclear which group he was siding with.

THIS IS AN OPEN THREAD. Take care, and have a wonderful Sunday.
