A Storm’s a Comin

Last night, Saturday Night Live’s cold open had a surprise guest: Stormy Daniels.

In the elaborate skit, Michael Cohen made phone calls to President Trump, Dr. Bornstein, Rudy Guiliani, and a few others, before calling up Stormy Daniels at the behest of his client. The FBI was listening in to the whole thing, shaking their heads in disbelief.

Stormy tells Trump that what she needs to make it all go away is his resignation and then closes by telling him, “A storm’s a comin’, baby.”

Technically, it was an impressive skit and it was funny as well, harvesting laughs from the news of the week.

This past week, the new head of Donald Trump’s legal team, Rudy Giuliani went on Hannity and claim that Donald Trump reimbursed Michael Cohen for the $130,000 payment to Stephanie Clifford, aka Stormy Daniels. Previously, Trump had denied knowing about the payment but has now admitted paying Cohen a monthly retainer to reimburse him for the Daniel’s payout.

Today, on ABC’s “This Week”, Giuliani said, when asked if there were payments to other women, “I have no knowledge of that. But I would think if it was necessary, yes.”

Also on ABC’s “This Week” Stormy’s attorney, Michael Avenatti, spoke about Giuliani’s comments in relation to her case.

From The Hill

Avenatti later pointed to Giuliani’s comments, and argued that they meant such payments on Trump’s behalf were “commonplace.”

“The president had effectively an extramarital affair slush fund that was administered by Michael Cohen, and that he would just be expected to take care of these things,” Avenatti said.

“I mean, that in and of itself should be very disturbing,” he continued. “Most people of means, most people of wealth and celebrity, they don’t have extramarital affair slush funds and the suggestion is insulting.”

On CBS’s “Face the Nation” this morning, Avenatti said, “We’ve proven to be very serious about this case. In fact, far more serious than Michael Cohen, Mr. Trump, or now Mr. Giuliani. I mean, this is the rope-a-dope defense  that we are seeing play out over the last week or so.”

When asked what Giuliani had given him as far as ammunition in the case, Avenatti answered, “Well, there’s no question that it’s gotten considerably stronger. It’s even stronger this morning. The more they talk the better our case gets. And here’s why: they can’t keep their story straight. They can’t keep their lies straight.”

He gave his thoughts on Stormy’s legal case, “With each passing day, with more and more statements made by Mr. Giulaini, Ms Conway now, Michael Cohen’s attorneys, and others, the likelihood of us being able to place this president under oath has gone up exponentially and I’m looking forward to that time.”

Just to recap:

The President of the United States is being lampooned on Saturday Night Live for making a hush money payment to a porn star during the 2016 election for an affair in which he was cheating on the woman, Karen McDougal, whom he was cheating on his wife with.

In the vileness of Donald Trump’s publicly admitted sexual conquests it is easy to become desensitized by them and shrug when we hear about him being sued by the porn star who wants out of NDA she signed but he didn’t. We shouldn’t allow ourselves to become desensitized. This behavior is wholly beneath the office of the president.

Is a storm coming, as Stormy predicted? Time will tell, but it is starting to look like the outer bands of Hurricane Stormy are approaching.

However, this storm is largely a storm of Donald Trump’s own making. If the allegations are true, that he had an affair with a porn star while his wife was at home with their 4 month old son and paid her off 11 days before the election, that it is now coming back to haunt him is entirely his fault. And his penchant for playing fast and loose with the truth and his legal team’s inability to stick to a story and control the narrative are going to cause untold damage to his case and puts him in real legal jeopardy.

With friends like Michael Cohen and Rudy Giuliani, President Trump needs a storm shelter. And even that might not do him any good at this point.
