ABC Announces Roseanne Spin-off

On Thursday ABC announced plans to create a spin-off of the now cancelled Roseanne show.

The working title “The Conners,” is set to begin production soon with the original cast members returning, without the star of the show, actress Roseanne Barr.

ABC said in a press release, via CNN, that “Roseanne Barr will have no financial or creative involvement in the new series.”

The move comes just weeks after the show Roseanne was cancelled after Barr published a racist tweet in which she accused former President Obama’s adviser Valerie Jarrett of being the child of the Muslim Brotherhood and comparing Jarrett to an ape, shortly after Barr deleted the tweet and apologized.

The firestorm that followed had one actress working on the Roseanne show, Wanda Sykes, announcing via twitter that she would not be returning to the show. Barr’s co-star actress Sara Gilbert, who played Darlene, Barr’s on screen daughter, tried to distance herself and fellow cast mates from the show, from the tweet, calling it “abhorrent,” and that it did “not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew.”

Channing Dungey, ABC’s Entertainment President acted swiftly in announcing the cancellation of the number one hit show issuing a brief statement, via Deadline, that read, “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.”

In the days that followed the abrupt cancellation the actress who had said she was leaving twitter instead took to twitter and in one bizarre now deleted tweeted blamed the drug Ambien for her late night tweeting.

The markers of Ambien responded

After the ABC announcement that a deal had been reached to reboot the cancelled reboot, Barr issued a statement via Deadline, “I regret the circumstances that have caused me to be removed from Roseanne,” I agreed to the settlement in order that 200 jobs of beloved cast and crew could be saved, and I wish the best for everyone involved.”

The remaining stars of the show, Sara Gilbert, John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Lecy Goranson, and Michael Fishman issued a joint-statement also via Deadline, “We have received a tremendous amount of support from fans of our show, and it’s clear that these characters not only have a place in our hearts, but in the hearts and homes of our audience. We all came back last season because we wanted to tell stories about the challenges facing a working-class family today. We are so happy to have the opportunity to return with the cast and crew to continue to share those stories through love and laughter.”

The new series the Conners is set to air Tuesday nights at 8pm a premier date has not been set.
