Dennis Hof, Moral Leader Of The GOP

Roy Moore of Alabama.  Patrick Little of California.  Don Blankenship of West Virginia.  These are some of the people that GOP leadership has hoped would not win their bids for Senate seats in their respective states.  Those concerns were based on three criteria: the GOP believed the candidate’s rhetoric and past actions would render them unable to win (Politico); they were concerned their statements and history would damage other candidates (and the party’s fundraising) by association as they handed Democrats metaphorical hammers (New Yorker); and sometimes the GOP leadership simply viewed them as terrible people they didn’t want to associate with (Fox News).

There’s an old saying about playing with fire.  Meet Dennis Hof.  He’s the one in the picture above, partying with Heidi Fleiss and Ron Jeremy.

Dennis Hof, thankfully for the upper echelon of the Republican Party, is not running for national office.  The seat he seeks is comparatively minor: he’s trying for the state Assembly from district 36 in Nevada.  That is a minor position on the national level, although Assembly seats are very powerful in local politics.  He’s being promoted on the national level for one reason only: he’s a gift to the Democrats.

Hof is a professional pimp, a man who has made his fortune by acting as an intermediary and facilitator by selling the rental of women’s bodies for sexual gratification.  There is nothing illegal about this in Nevada.  It is viewed as immoral by most in the country, however, which is a key reason why it’s illegal in most of the country.  By having Hof as a spokesman for the Republican party, it damages their chances with voters who feel that traditional ethics are important.

Hof is a former Libertarian.  That’s the party of choice for people who wish to make their fortune in ethically dubious ways.  People take advantage of the Libertarians’ position of leaving little illegal and extend that to mean “little should be immoral.”  The inability to adequately explain the difference is one of the Libertarians’ greatest hurdles toward achieving national prominence.  Hof’s abandonment of the party which would accept his views on prostitution in favor of the Republicans is not something that helps them, politically.

The Democrats, on the other hand, are accepting the “gift” of Hof because it allows them to underscore the changes in the traditional morality of both the Republican party and the national Evangelical movement.  Hof allows them to demonstrate that the new definition of morality is not being attentive to Biblical teaching but rather toward political success.

From Reuters:

When news broke that Hof had won the nominating contest for a state Assembly seat on June 12, evangelical pastor Victor Fuentes said he closed his eyes and prayed.

He did not ask God to deliver Nevada and the Republican Party from Hof, the thrice-divorced author of “The Art of the Pimp” who campaigned as the “Trump of Pahrump.” Although Christian groups have long rallied against the state’s legal brothel industry, Fuentes was willing to overlook Hof’s history as a champion of the flesh trade and gave thanks for his victory.

“People want to know how an evangelical can support a self-proclaimed pimp,” Fuentes said in an interview at his home in Pahrump, an unincorporated town of 36,000 people that is the largest community in the sprawling, rural district where Hof is favored to win in November’s general election.

He said the reason was simple. “We have politicians, they might speak good words, not sleep with prostitutes, be a good neighbor. But by their decisions, they have evil in their heart. Dennis Hof is not like that.”

The pastor said he felt Hof would protect religious rights, among other things.

Forget the person’s actions.  Forget his former words.  Don’t forget what he has written about, but ignore the bulk of it and only focus upon the parts about being successful.  Forget the actions on his television show, and focus on the fact that the additional fame it has accorded him increases his chances of winning.

What matters is whether he has good in his heart.

There is validity to that position, but there are two problems with its implementation:

  1. It is impossible for a human being to know with certainty what lies in someone else’s heart.  That, for the religious, is in God’s hands only; and it it blasphemous in most religions to assume the mantle of God.
  2. When human beings attempt to determine what is in someone’s heart, they are expected to use available data.  Data such as: the person’s actions, his former words, what he has written about, and the actions taken for public consumption.

More from the Reuters interview:

“This really is the Trump movement,” Hof, 71, told Reuters in an interview at Moonlite BunnyRanch, his brothel near Carson City in northern Nevada that was featured on the HBO reality television series “Cathouse.”

“People will set aside for a moment their moral beliefs, their religious beliefs, to get somebody that is honest in office,” he said. “Trump is the trailblazer, he is the Christopher Columbus of honest politics.”

This is why the Democrats will be able to tie him to the Republicans.  Hof recognizes that the GOP-leaning media groups have spent two years covering every Trump reversal as if it were part of a grand plan and portraying Trump, an inveterate and easily proven liar, as a fundamentally honest man.  They have conditioned their audiences to believe only the most recent statement and ignore the past, no matter how recent that past might be.  Hof recognizes this fact and is using it to his advantage.  The Democrats will use Hof to theirs.
