On Wednesday long-time justice appointed to the Supreme Court in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan, Justice Anthony Kennedy, announced his retirement from the high court. He is 81 years old.
There had been rumors he would seek to leave the court at the end of the session, his retirement is set to start on July 31st.
In his statement, via the above image of his letter he said, “It has been the greatest honor and privilege to serve our nation in the federal judiciary for 43 years, 30 of those years on the Supreme Court.”
Justice Kennedy through the years on the bench was considered the swing vote, filling a pivotal rule between the more liberal and conservative justices.
His retirement will allow President Trump to pick another Supreme Court Justice, given the nature of current partisan fights happening on the Hill, it’s unclear who both sides of the aisle would reject or confirm or how long any confirmation process would take.
