On Sunday allegations emerged that U.S. Rep Keith Ellison, (MN-D), for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district and newly elected deputy chair of the Democratic National Committee, physically abused his ex-girlfriend Karen Monahan, allegations Ellison denies, Minnesot’s StarTribune reported.

It all started Saturday night when one of Monahan’s sons, Austin Monahan, alleged on his social media Facebook account that during Ellison’s relationship with his mother Ellison “dragged her off the bed by her feet” while shouting profanities, saying Ellison put his mother through “pure hell”.

“I was using my moms computer trying to download something and I clicked on a file, I found over 100 text and twitters messages and video almost 2 min long that showed Keith Ellison dragging my mama off the bed by her feet, screaming and calling her a “fucking bitch” and telling her to get the fuck out of his house.”

He goes on to say, “We watched her so called political friends stand by say or do nothing. People had an idea what happened and never reached out to my mom. The same people who are posting about social justice are ready to smear my mom, protect a person who abused her and broke the law. You think we give a shit about a politics when we saw what our mom went through?”

Karen Monahan is active in Minnesota politics and has been involved in the ‘#MeToo” movement saying she had been a victim as well, though would not elaborate, but since her son made public the allegations, has, through a post on her own social media account, confirmed her son’s allegations.

“What my son said is true. Every statement he made was true.@keithellison, you know you did that to me. I have given every opportunity to get help and heal. Even now, u r willing to say my son is lying and have me continue to leak more text and info just so others will believe him” and saying that he read messages Ellison threatened his mother if she went public.

Monahan goes on to write, “For you to get help and heal. Told u that would be what I would could consider a Just ending to this hell my family and I have been through. I said that the night before u announced ur run 4 AG”

Ellison announced this past June that he would not seek reelection to what would have been his 7th term in the U.S. House of Representatives, but will instead seek the office for Minnesota Attorney General as a candidate for the Democratic-Farm-Labor Party (DFL), which is a Minnesota state affiliation of and “Progessive Movement” within the Democratic Party.

Monahan then proceeds to post a string of screen shots of texts messages allegedly between Ellison and herself she says are from April 2, 2018. In one, it says, “they trusted a con artist (Louisiana con man, as you call yourself) with the most private, deepest parts of themselves. It’s soul rape. We literally slept and trusted a fictitious character…”

On Sunday Ellison denied the allegations and there are no police reports or court documents to confirm the incident.

The StarTribune reported that Ellison issued a brief statement through his campaign saying, “Karen and I were in a relationship which ended in 2016, and I still care deeply for her well-being” saying further that in Ellison’s statement it referred to “a video allegedly showing him in a violent act with her did not exist.”

One fellow DFL member has called for an investigation into the allegations and some are going so far as to tell Ellison he should step down from his race for Minnesota’s Attorney General.

Ellison divorced from his wife, Kim Ellison, in 2012. They have four children. Kim Ellison was elected to the Minneapolis School Board in 2012 and their oldest son, Jeremiah, was elected to Minneapolis’ City Council in 2017.

Why It Matters

This is a developing story and is definitely going to be one to watch. Keith Ellison is a high-profile, up and coming rising politic star within the Democratic Party whose name has been floated in the rumor mill for a presidential hopeful within the Party.

Up until now Ellison has been the front runner for his Minnesota attorney general candidacy. Something like this, if proven true, and maybe even just on the allegations alone, especially in today’s political climate of the ‘#MeToo” movement, could knock Ellison off his rising star’s pedestal.
