The representative for Waffle House said it well at the press briefing about the Waffle House shooting. He told James Shaw, “You don’t get to meet too many heroes in life, Mr. Shaw. But you are a hero. You’re my hero. You saved people’s lives, and I talked to some of those people you saved today and they will think of you for the rest of their days.”
Shaw, on the other hand, was not concerned about that. His very significant portion of the story, and his grounded stance, was previously described here:

During the press briefing, he expounded:
RT NBCNews: “It was at that time I kind of made up my mind … that if it was going to come down to it, he was going to have to work to kill me,” says James Shaw Jr., man who wrestled gun away from Waffle House shooting suspect. pic.twitter.com/RtShBDQI6m

During the event, Shaw suffered a minor gunshot wound to his arm, which was treated at the hospital. He said he didn’t think about his daughter until he was in the ambulance, and then what he did hit home hard.
More information came out during the press conference about Reinking.
Again from The Tennessean:
In July 2017, the U.S. Secret Service arrested Reinking for being in a “restricted area” near the White House, according to the Secret Service.
“He wanted to set up a meeting with the president,” said Secret Service representative Todd Hudson.
One of the results of that arrest was the confiscation of Reinking’s guns. His father, also licensed, claimed the guns and has since admitted to returning them to Travis. From NewsChannel5 (NBC):
Reports stated authorities had previously seized his firearms. They were given to his father who acknowledged he gave them back to his son.
The dead and injured have been identified. From WRKN (ABC) :
- Taurean C. Sanderlin, 29, employee of the restaurant who was killed outside.
- Joe R. Perez, 20, was a restaurant patron who was killed while standing outside
- A 21-year-old woman was killed inside the restaurant
- Akilah Dasilva, 23, was critically wounded inside the restaurant and later died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center
21-year-old Shanita Waggoner and 24-year-old Sharita Henderson were both injured and are being treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
From Business Insider, the U.S. Representative for the area has responded by calling for gun restrictions, using the ill-defined term “assault weapons”:
U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper, whose district includes Nashville, said in an emailed statement that the shooting shows the need for tighter restrictions on “widespread civilian access to military-grade assault weapons.”
Reinking has been placed on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted List.
