Propaganda Watch: Williams and Kalvin

This is part of an ongoing series where I review some of the ads purchased by the Russians. In doing so I hope we can get a better understanding of what they were trying to do, and how to recognize it the next time we’re faced with propaganda.

If you want to follow along, the ads can all be downloaded here.

The folder for November 2015 introduces us to a YouTube channel for Williams and Kalvin, two men who claim to be brothers from Atlanta. While no records show them from Atlanta, it’s suspected they were among Nigerian students recruited to pipe in with “opinions” on the US elections of 2016.

They had three ads in the 2015-q4/2015-11 folder (although two of them were duplicates). Ad p(1)0001453:

The next is p(1)0001618, which is almost a duplicate of p(1)0001616 but with more heading text:

While those are the only three files from this folder, Medium has collected their social media posts here and here. It will be interesting to watch this channel evolve as it gets closer to the 2016 election.

Enjoy this open thread, and have a pleasant Sunday.
