I’m sure someone thinks everyone of you are special, but not all of you are special in this sense: Some people smell ants. This is the moment when you either think “wow, people smell ants?” or “wait, some people can’t smell ants?”.

Carpenter Ants when threatened spray formic acid as a defense mechanism, it’s a caustic chemical that smells like vinegar. Other species release pheromones when killed (i.e. squished) and it’s thought that “smelling ants” can be tied to a persons genetics.

It’s not so much leaning over to an ant on your counter and sniffing it, it’s tied to the demise of these little guys however violent it may be. When ants die of natural causes, they also release oleic acid, an unsaturated fatty acid that smells like olive oil. So when you smell olive oil, know that little ant lived a full and happy life.

QOTN: Please, someone tell me they can smell ants?!
P.S. Because I’ve never been know to leave them wanting more, you know when you eat asparagus and you pee and it smells different? Yeah, apparently not everyone can smell that either. wtf is that about?
