Jobs Report Bits:

MAY05 Payroll employment rises by 253,000 in April; unemployment rate changes little at 3.4%

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 253,000 in April, and the unemployment rate changed little at 3.4 percent. Employment continued to trend up in professional and business services, health care, leisure and hospitality, and social assistance.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

Checking in with Ben Casselman for help with understanding some breakdowns and visuals:

Side note ICYMI:

If data is ‘showing little slowdown in wage growth’ and there is 80.8% employment (up a tenth from April) might be hint why Feds raised the rate again as overall slowdown trend may point to their convoluted reasoning raising rates is working on one level while signs seem to point to possible tightening of belts in preparation of *waves hands in the air* whatever may or may not be coming down the pike. (How was that for a hella run on sentence.) Word on the street in the oil industry is contractors may be starting to be let go again and that is usually a sign layoffs may be around the corner as well as companies use the stock market as their gambling book.

For more of Ben’s live updates of today’s report you can follow along here:

U.S. Job Growth Remains Strong
The labor market showed resilience in April, despite the Federal Reserve’s efforts to cool the economy. More jobs were added than in recent months and the unemployment rate fell.
