President Trump announced via Twitter that Defense Secretary Jim Mattis will be retiring at the end of February.

Mattis joins several other members of President Trump’s cabinet that have announced their departure including Chief of Staff John Kelly.

Kyle Griffin via Twitter posted a list of names that have departed Trump’s administration since he was sworn into office in January of 2017.

In his letter of resignation to the President, Mattis writes, “Because you have the right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects, I believe it is right for me to step down from my position.”

CNBC News has a copy of Mattis’s full letter to President Trump

Mattis’s departure comes just a day after President Trump announced via Twitter, that he was pulling 2,000 ground troops out of Syria, a move that seemed to blindside D.C..
